Szlak:

From Sztum to Biała Góra and Ryjewo

Opis

Total length of the route: 41 kilometers (additional 4 km to „Swedish Entrenchments” and Mennonite cemeteries)

The route: Sztum – Sztumskie Pole – Biała Góra – Benowo – Ryjewo – Klecewko – Postolin – Czernin - Sztum

Time: 5-6 h (including about 2h for visiting places)

Suggested type of bicycles: trekking bicycles

Road surface and a difficulty level: almost the whole route runs along the local asphalt roads. An easy route

Route marking: for about 15 kilometers the route runs along the international bicycle route R1 (Sztum – the road junction to the south from Biała Góra). Then the route is unmarked

Route variants: The alternative route for the section between Sztum and Biała Góra (to avoid poor surface and traffic) is the bicycle route of ground surface from Sztumskie Pole to Uśnice and then the forest pathway along the Nogat river to Biała Góra. The total length of the route is about 44 kilometers

Route description:

The route runs across two geographical regions which are quite different from each other: the Wisła river valley and Iławskie Lakeland. The eastern part includes Iławskie Lakeland shaped by a glacier into an intriguing landscape, with numerous hills and vast panoramic views. Wide-spreading fields interlace with great forests. From Sztum to Biała Góra the route runs through huge pine forests of Puszcza Sztumska. In the area of Ryjewo the edge of the plateau is also covered with beautiful pine forests with some patches of leafy and mixed forest.

The route in the Wisła river valley, along its section from Biała Góra to Benowo, runs across a drained, flat area which is cut with numerous canals.

Sztum, Biała Góra and Ryjewo appear as places of special interest. You will need about 30 minutes up to 1 hour to visit each of them. You should not miss an opportunity to see two cemeteries in Barcice (they are situated near the route, however not exactly on it). Finding “Swedish Entrenchments” (Szwedzkie Szańce) may be quite difficult so it is better to leave your bicycles in the forester’s lodge and ask the forester about the way.
